Yesterday, Microsoft released the January firmware updates for both the Surface Pro 4 and Surface Book. Both are titled “System Firmware Update – 1/27/2016”. Hopefully, they won’t have problems like the recent SP3 update package.
Here’s a list of what’s included for both platforms:
January Firmware for Surface: Surface Pro 4
- Surface Embedded Controller Firmware (v103.899.256.0) adds battery charging enhancements and thermal tuning.
- Surface Fingerprint Sensor driver update (v2.2.10.6) improves accuracy.
- Wireless Network Controller and Bluetooth driver update (v15.68.9037.59) improves access point compatibility and throughput on 5Ghz networks.
January Firmware for Surface: Surface Book
- Surface Embedded Controller Firmware (v88.899.256.0) adds battery charging enhancements and thermal tuning.
- Wireless Network Controller and Bluetooth driver update (v15.68.9037.59) improves access point compatibility and throughput on 5Ghz networks.
- Surface DTX driver update (v1.3.202.0) improves detection of the Surface keyboard to the clipboard.
In addition to the updates list above, one additional update is available for Surface Books with an NVIDIA GeForce dGPU:
- NVIDIA GeForce GPU update (v10.18.13.5914) improves stability.
All in all, a pretty short list. Unfortunately, while the “Surface Embedded Controller Firmware (v103.899.256.0)” update seems to be power related, it seems to be more for charging optimizations as opposed to addressing the ongoing battery drain issues so many have been suffering.
I did the install this morning and, so far, haven’t had any issues as a result on my SP4 or my Surface Book. As usual, Microsoft will have rolled the updates out in waves so, if you haven’t received them yet, you will within a couple of days.
